How Do You Get Rid Of Anxiety? Face It Head On

The Doctors, drug manufacturers and throwers of bones won't like me for saying this, but the last things you need are pills for anxiety. The exception is if you find yourself in a situation where, for whatever reason, you are extremely anxious to the point where you're terrified.

Then, go to an emergency room of a hospital which preferably has a psych ward, and ask for pills to calm you down. They'll give you what they consider to be the sort of medications you need, but be content with one prescription. The whole idea is to calm you down with drugs that are probably fairly powerful and then wean you off them. The reason for being weaned off these pills is that it's all too easy to become reliant upon them.

They're wonderful servants, but terrible masters.

But it is wise to be weaned off them. Let's say you've been given pills of 2 milligramme strength to be taken twice a day. After 10 days, this should then be cut to one milligramme and then 1/2 a milligramme after another 10 days which will take you up to 30 days. Now, this is just a very simple example, but it does show the way in which a drug can be useful. But during this month of taking medications, don't simply rely on them.

The first thing to remember is that you've been going through a perfectly normal experience, because for some reason, you're suffering from stress. The next step is to discover the whys and wherefores of this stress. What's been happening in your life that has produced this stressed out feeling, which in turn led to that awful feeling of desperation, necessitating you taking drugs?

To re-visit our dear old ancestor who's pretty sure there's a sabre toothed tiger on his track, if you, too, are suffering from a physical threat, then obviously you should get out from under just as quickly as you are able. But you're far more likely to be suffering from a problem you're having with your spouse or some difficulty at work. Or your imagination could be playing games with you. Let's have a look at the first two.

Problems with your spouse or at work? You simply must face these head on. I know how difficult it can be, but leaving these worries to fester will only lead to your becoming worse and worse. Sit down and sort out these problems in your head in an orderly fashion. Then you're far better able to face your spouse/boss with your mind properly geared to reason out the problem(s) so that you can talk things through and arrive at a solution.

The third problem, of course, is your imagination. There are occasions when a thought pops into your head and takes on a life of its own. Perhaps for no good reason whatever, you think the roof is leaking. Now, if you don't do anything about this, it'll build and build and probably make you ill. So again, face the problem. Either inspect the roof yourself or bring in a good builder to have a look for you.

But whether it's real or imaginary, always face your fear
