Dealing With Negative Thoughts

We all have negative thoughts at times. This is normal. But, for those who suffer from certain anxiety disorders, negative thinking can lead to the onset of anxiety attacks. Once these attacks occur, the person's quality of life suffers dramatically.

The issue with anxiety disorders and negative thinking is that one negative thought will often develop into a series of more powerful negative thoughts. These thoughts are often based on self-criticism and can lead the person to believing that he or she is somehow less than other people.

Negative thinking, however, can be controlled once the person learns a few techniques. Once under control, the person can begin to live a normal life again.

Some of the ways that you can deal with negative thinking, which in turn can change your behavior, include using technique known as mindfulness.

This is a very old method that teaches the person to focus on his or her surroundings and feelings without being judgmental about either. With this technique, there is no right or wrong, good or bad, positive or negative. Things are simply what they are, and nothing else.

The person learns to avoid negative thinking in such a way that it also helps to calm the nerves and prevent panic attacks. Instead of focusing of what is bothering you, you concentrate on neutral or positive thoughts concerning the issue.

The goal behind this method is to not allow the occurrence of negative thoughts which, as we know, feed into more negative thoughts. By stopping the cycle early on, you can minimize or eliminate anxiety symptoms. It also teaches you how to avoid judging yourself too harshly when such judgment is not warranted.

You may also benefit by using affirmations. These are positive statements that you repeat to yourself several times during the course of the day. These positive statements are especially useful when negative thought patterns are a threat. Your affirmations can be customized to fit any need, at any time.

Both of these methods allow you to regain control of your thought process. You do not have to tolerate negative thinking if you do not wish it. The key is to replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts.

Whenever you find yourself thinking negative thoughts, fight back with positive thoughts or affirmations. These repeated positive thoughts or words will help change your outlook on the situation you are in. You can even keep a journal of your thoughts and jot down which affirmations worked best for any particular issue.

Both of these methods require practice and will take some time to master. However, because they are so powerful and effective, they are worth the investment. They can help you live a happier life.
