Help for Panic Attacks

ByTom Tait

Yeah, I know what you mean, it's really hard trying to find help for your panic attacks. It's even hard just figuring out what you need and what will help you. Well let's see if we can't think this through together.

Get Informed

First of all, begin by boning up on panic attacks. Your best friend when it comes to something like this is knowledge. The more you know about what a panic attack is and how it works, the less power it will have over you. You would be surprised how often just coming to an understanding is enough to make them lose most of their power.

The reason for this is obvious. When you fully realize that an attack is just an overreaction by your brain to a false sense of danger, then the surprise and lack of context for your panic attacks goes away and this robs it of half its power. Now you know what it is. You know it will go away soon. You might even begin to see what is causing it in the first place. It's not quite as scary as it used to be.

Don't Go It Alone

If at all possible, you want to recruit a person that you trust to help you through the process of overcoming your panic attacks. Ideally this person should be someone who is patient, who you trust and who has the time and inclination to help you through you situation. Most of us have someone like this in our family or circle of friends. They are the one who is always there in a pinch--the nurturer of the group.

Go to them and explain your problem and ask if they would be willing to help you to find help. This can be awkward, but often the person will be flattered by your confidence in them and will be more than willing to help out. That way as you go through the process of dealing with your attacks you can always have someone there who you can bounce your worries off and who can help you see things more objectively.

If you do not have someone in your circle of friends and family who can fulfill this role you might want to do a search for panic attack support group.

Seeking Professional Help

Once you get a clearer sense of what type of panic disorder you have and how severe it is, you can begin looking for professional help. Although you can deal with some milder forms of panic disorder on your own, many cases of panic disorder can only be fully cured by seeking a mental health professional.

Mental health professionals who specialize in getting you can set you going in the right direction. These specialists will help you get down to the causes and help you deal with them. Through behavior therapy, most sufferers are able to either fully cure themselves of their panic attacks or to make the attacks manageable so that you can go about your normal life without having them as a constant worry.

Also, mental health professionals will often be able to give you medications that will help you deal with the symptoms.

All of this is an invaluable resource for someone trying to deal with panic attacks.

These three simple steps can make a big change in the quality of your life. Getting informed, finding a support person and getting the therapy you need will help you make your attacks only one part of your life instead of the main concern of it. Even if you cannot fully rid yourself of your attacks, with the proper help you will at least be able to limit the destructive force of your attacks. And that is certainly worth the effort, isn't it!?
