Do You Suffer From An Inferiority Complex?

The self esteem brigade and the media have a lot to answer for. The platform of the former is to say that we all have the same potential as everyone else. Now this is fine, except for one thing. Talent. People have a talent for writing. A talent for painting. A talent for mathematics. However much I may want to paint like Turner, I could never do it. A few stick figures and that's me, finished!

The latter, television and magazines especially, are guilty of showing us images of 'beautiful people' and telling us that if we drink 'A's' Vodka, or use 'B's' aftershave or smother ourselves with 'C's' perfume, then we'll be just like these dream people.

Now, there's a big difference between knowing and feeling. I know that Mr. Dell knows a great deal more about computers than I. Without any doubt, I know that Mr. Charles Dickens was a much better writer
than I am.

The person who suffers from a true inferiority complex, is the one who thinks he's worse than his peers. Let's assume he's an accountant. He's risen fairly high up in the firm, but for some reason, he feels that his abilities are below those of his associates, even though in fact he's better than most. Furthermore, even with proof laid out before him, he genuinely can't see his superiority, or at least his equality.

Let's first see why you feel inferior. If you had siblings, were you always being told to; 'be more like your brother/sister? Or you're married to someone who's always telling you that 'Bert does all his own house repairs.' First of all, 'like' your brother or sister in what way? Can Bert teach advanced calculus? To say simply that one person's better than another in one specific area, doesn't cut it.

But you say you have an inferiority complex. Let's take it a stage further. You're inferior to whom? The Queen of England? Your Bank manager? Fred who runs the pub on the corner? Be specific. I haven't counted them recently, but there are about 7 billion people in the World. Can you, in all honesty, say that you're inferior to all of them?

Another fault is trying to be like someone else. A bit of hero worship isn't a bad thing in your teens, provided you pick someone worthwhile, but when you're a grown man or woman, be yourself. It's much more natural that way and much more comfy in your skin.

There's one more problem. Being a slave to thoughts like; If only I looked like a (famous body builder). If only I had the gorgeous features of (Ms. Famous Filmstar). Sorry, but they're probably two of the most unpleasant people you're ever likely to meet. The best thing to do is a bit of list-making. Write down all your good points.

An encouraging environment helps children have a developmentally healthy childhood. On the other hand, in an environment that teaches them to suppress their emotions and cultivate fear, children grow up with anxiety. They don't get appreciated for anything. It makes them think that they are not able to do anything good in life. The lack of self esteem that stems from this environment never leaves them until they get help.

Since mind and body are closely bound with each other, some medical conditions may cause anxiety. It is already proven that some factors make a certain group of people more vulnerable while other factors have little effect on them. What Does Generalized Anxiety Disorder Mean?

The book that tells us all about mental illnesses, the book, (or Bible, if you like), used by Doctors, Psychiatrists, Psychologists, indeed anyone who works in the mental health profession is titled 'The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.' It informs us that 'Generalized Anxiety Disorder means at least 6 months of excessive anxiety and worry about a variety of events and situations.' Now, that doesn't mean to say that you have to be worrying about all manner of things.

It may mean that, but on the other hand it may mean just one thing. The important figure to bear in mind is that it must be ongoing for at least 6 months. Probably the best way of looking at it is that Generalized Anxiety Disorder is the vehicle that drives you around, looking for something to worry about. If you're suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder, you're already wound up tightly, so your mind runs around trying to find something real or imaginary to worry about. Let's try an example. It's Saturday morning and you decide to go to the Bank. You're in plenty of time. You arrive there at ten o'clock, and the Bank doesn't close until 11.30. If it hadn't been the Bank, you'd have found something else to upset you. Why not go to you car, sit down and ask yourself whether you'd have behaved like that if you hadn't been wound up tightly? If you'd been calm, you'd have felt a bit of annoyance, probably, or you may have simply had a chuckle at the poor old boy's expense. But that answers the question nicely; ''

Anxiety is a vague feeling of apprehension. It is usually caused by an internal or external stimulus that is manifested in to behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and physical symptoms. According to studies, panic disorder can be passed from parents to children. So, a family history of the anxiety disorder places one at a greater risk of having the condition. Another is abnormalities in the brain. In this disorder, Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is usually dysfunctional. It is a neurotransmitter responsible for inhibiting anxiety through reducing the cell's excitability. Substance abuse and life stress can trigger panic attacks.

A panic disorder is usually difficult to diagnose because it may be caused by other underlying conditions. A diagnostic tool for a panic disorder is DSM-IV-TR. Here, meet my three friends: Steven, Danny and Sarah. Steven is an Iraq War vet who served two tours. He is in his 40's and trying to make it as a car salesman at his local Ford dealership. Danny is a high school student who gets mostly A's and wants to be a doctor one day. Sarah is a young stay-at-home mom who just moved to a new town with her husband and twin daughters.

What do they have in common? They all suffer from anxiety disorder.

But their are all different.

: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD

Steven suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD is an anxiety disorder caused by the stress that comes from being in extreme danger. We think of it as a soldier's condition because so many of our veterans suffer from it.

But each one of them suffers from it in a little bit of a different sort of way. For Steven, he suffers from anxiety attacks triggered by whatever reminds him of the IED that took two of his buddy's lives and cost him his right leg below the knee. Whenever anything reminds him of that day he is thrown right back into it.

One of his main triggers is the sound of cars, especially VW's for some reason, racing by near him. On the day that his company was hit this was one of the last things that he heard right before the IED went off. A car whizzed by and then bam! Next thing he knew he was in a hospital in Germany.

: Social Anxiety Disorder

For Danny the war is just something on TV. Danny might seem like a fairly typical high school student when you see him at home. At school though, you notice Danny eats his lunch alone. One of his teacher's lets students eat in his classroom where they play board games and socialize. Danny is there every day but never plays with anyone. His head is always buried in a book.

Danny does really well in most of his classes but if you looked over his report card you notice he got a C in World History last year. He didn't do a group oral report that was worth 10% of his overall grade. He didn't show up on the day his group was supposed to do their demonstration and he didn't do the make up oral report that would have given him credit for doing his part in the project.

Danny's him to shy away from people. Social anxiety disorder is like a shyness so bad the sufferer can't even bring himself to communicate properly. When someone talks to Danny in school Danny stares down at the ground and mumbles so quietly no one can understand him.

Asking Danny to do an oral report is like asking him to jump into a cage with a hungry lion.

: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, GAD

Sarah had no problem socializing with people in high school. But Sarah has always been a worrier. She is the sort of person that worries that any sneeze is the beginning of a life threatening disease. In school she was convinced despite her good grades that she was going to fail every test.

Now Sarah, married with kids and doing the whole stay-at-home mom thing in a new suburban town, worries even more. Without her old family and friends Sarah finds that her Generalized Anxiety Disorder has increased in intensity. Because she is always with her kids she doesn't eat, sleep or exercise properly and so her her to worry about terrorism and the economy and pedophiles and global warming... Her mind just goes on and on, exhausting her with irrational worries.

Despite all being very different, Steven, Danny and Sarah all suffer from anxiety disorders. But each of their anxiety disorders comes from different causes. If you recognized some of your symptoms in theirs, you might want to do more research so that you can find out how to lessen your anxiety.

It's pretty confusing, huh? Panic attacks? Anxiety disorder? Panic disorder? Anxiety attacks? I mean what are we talking about? Are they exactly the same? Or is there a difference?

Well, let's see if we can sort it out together. Here's the basics:

Panic Attacks: Just one of the Rooms in the House Known as Anxiety Disorder

Put simply, panic attacks are just one manifestation of the general category of anxiety disorders. So, it is possible for you to have an anxiety disorder but not have panic attacks, but it is not possible for you to have panic attacks but not have an anxiety disorder since a panic attack is an anxiety disorder.

What is a Panic Attack?

both involve a general sense of apprehension when it comes to facing the world. What makes panic attacks distinctive, however, is that they involve specific episodes where a person has a physical and psychological attack. Physical symptoms include chest pains, difficulty breathing, accelerated pulse, and dizziness. Sometimes they will also tremble and have hot or cold flashes.

Psychologically, the person having the attack will feel an overwhelming fear that they are about to die or that they are losing their minds. These episodes or attacks can last as long as an hour though they are typically only a few minutes long.

What is Anxiety Disorder?

Although the two are related there are other types of anxiety disorder that do not always involve panic attacks. Depending who you talk to, there are five other kinds.

GED, generalized anxiety disorder, is a condition where a person is constantly and disproportionately worried about things that might not even affect them. (A housewife might spend hours and days worrying about terrorism or swine flu, for example.)

Social Anxiety Disorder is basically a fear of interacting with other people. These sufferers are typically hyper-shy people who can't even make eye contact with other people and who mumble when spoken to.

Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome, PTSD, is a condition that you may have heard of in relation to our veterans. It typically does involve panic attacks, but unlike many panic attacks is caused by a specific life threatening event in the sufferer's past.

Separation Anxiety is a disorder that makes the sufferer want to always remain in contact with a loved one. This over-clinging often causes a sense of constant anxiety that cannot be fulfilled by any level of attention from the loved one.

Phobias are intense fears of specific stimuli. You might think of it as the Indiana Jones anxiety disorder, as in: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?" People with this disorder are terrified of a specific thing in the world like spiders, or snakes or mice.

and Depression

To complicate the distinction between the two however, it must be said that panic attacks are often associated with both phobias and PTSD. For this reason, many experts consider them as less of an anxiety disorder by itself than as a manifestation of other forms of disorders.

Further complicating things is the fact that almost everyone who suffers from anxiety attacks, also suffers from depression. The connection is so strong, in fact, that often the best medical prescription for anxiety attacks is not anti-anxiety medication but medication that are made to treat depression.

Having explained all this, however, I should say that it hardly matters what the distinctions between these diseases are. If you suffer from any of these you just want to find an appropriate treatment. So, keeping in mind that when you suffer from anxiety attacks you are also likely to suffer from other anxiety type disorders or from depression you should learn more and seek out an appropriate treatment for your individual condition. He never even met with the group of students that he was assigned to be in.

They will become physically ill at the thought of required social interactions-especially if these interactions aren't in extremely scripted situations. Class is hard enough, but the chaos of a party seems like a battle zone to them.

None of these are a sure sign of social anxiety disorder in itself, but taken together they are a good indicator of the possibility of it.

Genetics and Parental Models

Studies have shown that social anxiety children are likely to have biological parents who also suffered from the condition. This can be due to both genetics and modeling. So a child might inherit the predisposition to social anxiety and then have it reinforced by watching their parents' nervousness in social situations.

Treatment

There is hope. tends to respond well to both behavior modification therapy and to medication. Behavior modification largely involves gradual exposure to the social situations the child fears and attempts to prevent the negative behaviors that make it difficult for them to interact with other children.

So, typically the child in therapy will slowly be introduced to controlled situations with other children. The child will go on a carefully structured play date, or have another child of the same age over for lunch. Then they will go over for a less structured experience. The idea is to slowly get the child comfortable with less structured interactions.

At the same time the child learns how to avoid mumbling and looking away during conversation and other strategies for interacting more effectively with others.

Often, health care professionals will also give the child medication that will help them soothe their anxieties during this process. There is a bit of controversy whether this sort of medicating is the healthiest response in the long run but it is an effective method for many children.

Regardless of what you decide to do, it is a good idea to begin early. Like most of these types of conditions, the longer you wait the more entrenched they become. So keep on researching and look to begin taking action as soon as you decide on a proper treatment.

Separation Anxiety

If your children have started kindergarten, you've probably already run across a bit of this. Most children experience a bit of separation anxiety when they are first dropped off at school. The child with separation anxiety disorder, however, experiences a much stronger and longer lasting version of this. This is the child that kicks and screams and demands that mommy not leave them. This is the child that continues to have these same reactions days and weeks longer than the other children. Typically the child with anxiety disorder who suffers from separation anxiety is afraid that mommy will not ever return. Adopted children and those that have experienced some form of abandonment are much more prone to this condition for obvious reasons. Often the child will attach to one of the caregivers at the school or daycare and demand the same sort of attention that s/he would from a parent. A similar condition can occur in older children, but it is typical of very young children.

Phobias

The slightly older child with anxiety disorder will experience irrational phobias centering around snakes, spiders, the dark, bugs etc. As the child begins to develop their imagination, those that are prone to anxiety will begin to fill the world with threatening monsters and animals. Children who suffer from this condition will typically fear a specific creature and often have trouble sleeping because they fear that spider or monster will be hiding in the dark to get them. Often just the mention of the creature is enough to set their anxieties going, even if the child has never seen the creature in real life.

Social Anxiety Disorder

The child with anxiety disorder will typically suffer social anxiety disorder in the teen years. This condition is characterized by an intense fear or discomfort with social situations. The teen will typically have difficulty interacting with his or her peers, will fear unstructured social situations and will have great difficulty communicating with other kids. Often these kids will mumble, avoid eye contact and withdraw when approached by other kids. They will be hyper conscious of how they are perceived and be terrified of any form of attention.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Kids of all ages can suffer from anxiety disorder. Kids with this kind of anxiety tend to be chronic worriers. They will typically have trouble sleeping, get more stomach and head aches and be more irritable than other kids. But it all comes back to worries about their safety. So, any bit of information that suggests that they or you might be in danger-being from terrorists, earthquakes, swine flu or spiders-will provoke an exaggerated response and literally hours of questioning. In the young child with anxiety disorder these worries will typically focus on specific anxiety's ("What happens if a burglar breaks into our house?") and they will tend to report physical symptoms ("My stomach hurts, mommy.") For teenagers with anxiety disorder, these worries will typically be more general and more complicated ("What if global warming makes it impossible for me to have a happy family?") and they will tend to report emotional symptoms ("I'm really nervous about my test on Friday.")
